SDET interviews are different from general QA interviews. You’ll still get testing methodology questions, but the bar shifts toward engineering. Expect to write code on a whiteboard or in a shared editor. Expect system design questions about automation architecture. Write a function that reverses a string without using built-in reverse methods.
This is a warm-up question, but interviewers are watching closely. Explain the difference between a stack and a queue. When would you use each in a testing context?
Stacks are last-in-first-out. Queues are first-in-first-out. For testing context: call stacks during debugging use stack behavior — the most recently called function is the first one you examine. Test execution queues use queue behavior — tests are processed in the order they were submitted. Structure your answer with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Start with enough context that the interviewer understands the stakes. Explain the technical approach you took and why you chose it over alternatives. Finish with the result and, ideally, what you’d do differently with hindsight. What does a good day look like for you as an SDET?
There’s no right answer here, but your response reveals what motivates you and how you see the role. A senior candidate might describe a day that mixes coding with mentoring a junior engineer and collaborating with a product team on testability for an upcoming feature. A junior candidate might talk about the satisfaction of shipping a new test suite that catches a regression on its first pipeline run.
Whatever you say, be genuine. Interviewers are screening for cultural fit and motivation, and rehearsed answers are transparent. If you genuinely enjoy debugging flaky tests (some people do), say so. If you find cross-team collaboration energizing, talk about that. The interviewer is trying to picture you on their team, so give them an honest image to work with.
How do you handle a situation where a developer disagrees that your finding is a bug?
Provide evidence: screenshots, logs, clear reproduction steps, a reference to the acceptance criteria or user story, and if possible a recording of the behavior.
